The Team Choo 2020 season started off on a very promising note, with three solid teams: 12U, 14U and 17U teams. Tryouts were held in February with a large number of tryout prospects. Selecting the 12 man rosters were not easy but Director Coach Lamont “Speedy” Pennick, 12/14U Coach Choo Smith and 17U Coach Antoine “Scoop” Jordan selected the athletes that best fit our system. The three twelve man rosters (12U, 14U and 17U) were completed.
Practice began in early March. All teams were excited and learning the plays. Then the COVID 19 pandemic hit home. We were forced on March 12th to shut down.
Things slowly began to open up and states were allowing basketball games to resume under strict conditions. Our 12/14U parents made the tough decision to not play this year due to all of the uncertainty. Our 17U parents and players made the decision to play as their High School Senior season was an uncertainty. With college scholarships on the line the 17U Team elected to play in four specific Hoop Group and Premier One tournaments. These tournaments were selected because they had the best protocols in place that would ensure our players and spectator safety.
Team Choo 17U played outstanding even with all of the uncertainty and constant changes. They won 2 Championships and made it to 1 final four games.
We were invited for the first time to the Battle of the Beltways in Delaware. It is here where the sportswriters evaluate and report on the standout players. In our first game we defeated a top Delaware team by 30 points and immediately hit the court for our 2nd game against a top ranked We R One. We represented Baltimore well. Kept the game close and lost in a heartbreaking last second shot to We R One by 1 point. Team Choo made a name for ourselves in that game.
